Gibraltar Information

Strategically important, Gibraltar was ceded to Great Britain by Spain in the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht; the British garrison was formally declared a colony in 1830. In referendums held in 1967 and 2002, Gibraltarians ignored Spanish pressure and voted overwhelmingly to remain a British dependency.

Gibraltar is our “Little Britain” on the Costa del Sol with its English and Irish Pubs, top Indian Restaurants and Marks & Spencer and Safeway supermarket, but for the majority of tourists visiting, it is the duty free shops that lines the high street which remains the top attraction. Many foreign residents living on the Costa del Sol actually work in Gibraltar. The only downside is definitely entering and leaving Gibraltar with the Spanish customs doing everything in their power to create lengthy queues. Gibraltar is well worth visiting, and is an ideal place for shopping.
