Fuengirola is famous for its long beach promenade. It has long been a popular holiday destination for northern Europeans but has somehow always maintained its Spanish identity. Fuengirola is probably not what we would describe as an ideal place for a holiday home, yet it has all the facilities and amenities one could ask for. There is a train line connecting Fuengirola to Malaga and the airport and the new motorway and improved main road has taken the worst of the traffic out of Fuengirola.
Fuengirola is in particular popular with Spanish nationals, many have a holiday apartment there but also with a large ex-pat community who lives among the Spaniards in a cosmopolitan lifestyle.
Somehow Fuengirola has failed to create a focal point, the whole town stretches along the five-mile long beach promenade, but over the past couple of years, Fuengirola has had a major facelift especially around the Plaza de la Constitution that now has become a fashionable shopping area with great cafes and restaurants. The town hall has budgeted for further improvements to the area including renovating the marina and creating more green areas in order to facilitate the growing number of residential tourists.
